Puneet Narang, M.D.

July 22, 2009

Puneet Narang, M.D.“I was born in a small town Batala, in northern India and am currently living in Minnesota, USA. I completed my medical school in 2003 from Pune, India. Pursuant to my immense interest in learning the complexities of human brain and behaviour, I did my psychiatry residency from King George’s Medical University in India from 2004-2007. During my tenure as a resident, I carried out research work in understanding the phenomenological differences in geriatric and adulthood depression. My work was presented at the Annual meeting of American Psychiatric Association held in San Diego and the World Psychiatric Association regional meeting at Shanghai, China. I also published a paper in the Mental Health Review journal on the shortcomings of mental health legislation in South Asia. I also had the opportunity to be the co-author of Clinical Practice Guidelines on reversible dementia by the Indian Psychiatric Society. Craving to learn more about the advancements in the field of psychiatry, I moved to United States. I was invited at University of Louisville as a clinical extern from November 2007 to January 2008 where I got acquainted with the American medical system.

Currently, I am pursuing Psychiatry Residency at Hennepin County Medical Center, Minneapolis, USA. Despite my stringent residency schedule, I try to take out time to keep in touch with latest in research and also am continually working on writing papers on various topics in psychiatry. I am currently working on a series of papers related to elderly population like use of antipsychotic, homelessness and late onset schizophrenia. My admiration for every discipline in psychiatry is making things tough for me to pursue further fellowship in one subspecialty, however, I have particular interest in addiction problems in adolescents, which is one of the growing concerns in psychiatry.

After successful completion of my residency, I plan to be a part of the evolution of psychiatry in both academic and clinical spheres. I look forward to sharing my ideas with others and continuing to spread my passion as we work to heal our patients.”
