Titular Professor, member of the Research Group on Psychiatry (GIPSI) and Coordinator of the Psychosocial Care Program for Victims of Violence,at the Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine of the University of Antioquia in Medellin, Colombia.

Medical Doctor and Surgeon of the Universidad Bolivariana in Medellin and Psychiatrist and Medical Psychologist of the Universidad Complutense of Madrid, Spain.

Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry University of Antioquia and Head of the San Vicente University Hospital Mental Health Unit from 2002 to 2010. 14 years ago he founded the Research Group on Psychiatry in the same University, which principal lines of research are Molecular Genetics, Biomarkers, Neuropsychological Endophenotypes, Clinical and Therapeutics issues related with Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia and Suicide in a large Colombian isolated sample; the Psychosocial and Psychopathological Consequences of Violence; and the relation between Anxiety/Depression Disorders and Heart Disease.

He has been member of the editorial board of several prestigious international Journals such as World Journal of Biological Psychiatry, Spanish Journal of Psiquiatria Biologica and Brazilian Journal of Psiquiatria Clinica. He is also Co-Chair of the Task Force on Genetics and member of the Scientific Publications Committee and the Research Committee of the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry. In addition, he is member of Regional Committee of the Collegium Internationale Neuro-Psychopharmacologicum; and the International Board of Trustees of American Society of Hispanic Psychiatry.

He has authored more than 50 published papers, chapters, and books in the field of Molecular Genetics, Biomarkers, Neuropsychological Endophenotypes and Clinical/Therapeutics Issues of Bipolar Disorders and Schizophrenia; Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Related Disorders in Victims of Violence; and Anxiety/Depression Disorders and Heart Disease. His group has received grants from Colciencias, NIH, Wellcome Trust among other and several national and international awards.
