Tired of kids continuing to be shot at schools? Okay: Do something about it…
Steven Lippmann, M.D.
Talk is cheep … action is better. School shooting frequency has escalated in recent decades; what society has done, has not been too effective. Shooting continues; we need to try some new corrective ideas. What are you going to do?
Public discussion is one way hopefully to begin diminishing this awful trend. Start by contacting your senators and representatives at the federal and state level. The same applies to state governors, your mayor, and local government officials. Talk at town meetings, school boards, political rallies, or similar places. Be the change you desire.
Physicians have the knowledge and position to be heard in the community and to professional healthcare peers. Suggest getting this topic on a medical meeting agenda, maybe present your ideas, or get an informed speaker. Publication in local newspapers and medical journals has wide readership and impact. Talking about curbing school gun violence might attenuate the problem and benefit our whole population, especially our children.
