“It is not death that a man should fear, but he should fear never beginning to live” – Marcus Aurelius (Roman emperor from 161 to 180)
Leo Sher, M.D.
Marcus Aurelius brings to mind that the real tragedy isn’t death itself, but a life lived passively, without purpose, courage, or joy. Too often, people move through their days mechanically, following routines that keep them safe but unfulfilled. Many people come to this realization only when time has already slipped away. They look back and see that they were merely existing — surviving, not truly living. To truly begin to live means daring to step beyond comfort, to take risks that awaken the spirit. It involves embracing new experiences with openness, even when they bring uncertainty or discomfort. It also means speaking and acting with honesty, allowing one’s true self to be seen without fear of judgment.
Above all, living fully means seeking a life filled with meaning and intention. It is about discovering a sense of purpose that guides our choices and gives depth to our experiences. This purpose often reveals itself through love, where we connect deeply with others, through work, where we create and contribute, and through personal growth, where we evolve and learn. To pursue meaning is to live with awareness and passion, transforming ordinary moments into expressions of a purposeful life.
