Hristina Koleva, M.D."Currently, I am a forth-year resident at the Department of Psychiatry, University of Iowa and also hold the position of a co-chief resident.

I received my Medical Degree from the Medical University of Sofia, Bulgaria in 2003 and pursued a career in psychiatry immediately after graduation. First, I worked for two years at Emergency Psychiatry Department in the City of Sofia.

I was accepted and started residency in psychiatry at the University of Iowa, USA, in 2006. During my training, I have gained extensive exposure to a wide variety of mental illnesses as well as developed skills in psychotherapy, mainly Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

During my senior resident years, I have pursued an elective in neuroimaging research on emotions and aging at the Psychiatry Neuroimaging Consortium, University of Iowa.

This year, I am also part of the team of the Women’s Wellness Clinic at the University of Iowa where I am involved in medication management, interpersonal psychotherapy and research on depression in the peripartum period.

I have published and presented on different psychiatric topics during my residency and attained a Winocur Award for Resident Research in 2008.

My professional interests include mood disorders, neuroimaging and women’s mental health.

I am excited to practice psychiatry in the 21st century and passionate about bringing enlightenment and enjoyment into the profession."
